Course Syllabus
Welcome to Human Resource Management in the Public Sector V373! My name is Neil Smith and I'm very much looking forward to serving as your instructor this semester. Let's keep things informal so please no "Mr. Smith" or "professor" necessary when addressing me (i.e., "Neil" or "Smith" will work just fine). Here are a few brief notes to get you going (please see syllabus for more detail):
Our class will meet on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 8am-9:15am. We will meet in room A335 and will likely be in person all semester.
Please plan on being present and engaged for the entirety of every class. In order to get the most value out of this class, we will all need to be ready to speak up and offer our opinions and thoughts on the subject matter being discussed. As best as I can, I will create a safe space in class where you can freely share without fear of judgement or getting something "wrong." Every thought and opinion counts, we are all in this together!

How we'll learn in this course
The structure is broken down into weekly modules. Typically, each weekly module will include the following:
In-class Lecture & Discussion Sessions
Course attendance is expected and your contribution is valuable. Each day we will approach the topic from that week's module in a combination lecture and discussion format, and your participation is strongly encouraged while your attendance is expected every class day. I do track attendance.
Read the syllabus for more details on the course requirements.
Expectations for the coursework
Come to class two times per week and follow the modules as described above. I respect your maturity as adults, thus you will not be inundated with constant prodding and reminders via email or Canvas announcements. I try to keep the volume of mass messaging to a reasonable level (weekly or semi-weekly) in an attempt to alleviate inbox overkill. You know... that feeling you get when the inbox becomes digital quicksand and a constant source of "what the &$%$ did I miss" stress?
Tools we'll be using
- Canvas
- Zoom (occasionally for virtual office hours or special events)
- Kaltura to a minimal extent (linked through the modules)
Please note: As we progress through the semester, this list may change. Learn about these tools at Keep Learning.
