Course Description: The mandatory V381: Professional Experience/V380: Internship Pub. & Envir. Affairs/H466: Public Health Field Experience course and internship program are part of the O'Neill School Undergraduate Career Core. These programs are designed to help you gain career-relevant experience while studying at the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Through this hands-on opportunity, you'll apply your academic knowledge in a real-world setting and develop crucial professional skills. Moreover, you'll gain valuable insights to guide your future education and career decisions.

V381/H466 is a 1-credit online course conducted asynchronously through Indiana University's Canvas portal. This platform serves as the bridge between your internship experience and your career development. Your instructor is your guide through this process. The assignments and discussions are designed to help you reflect on your internship experiences and develop career skills. They will also guide you in analyzing and synthesizing the knowledge gained during your internship, leading to a deeper understanding of your field.

As a student, you're expected to stay actively engaged with the Canvas site, participate in discussions with your cohort, and maintain regular communication with your instructor.

Learning Outcomes: Through this experience, you will:

  • Acquire 120 hours of professional experience in your degree field.
  • Enhance your professional skills and knowledge.
  • Gain confidence through empowering experiences.
  • Acquire firsthand industry insights.
  • Develop a competitive advantage in your field.
  • Explore potential career paths.
  • Build a professional network and secure valuable references.

How much time should you be spending on this class: If this is a standard 1-credit, online, semester length class, you are expected to spend an average of 1 or more hours outside of your internship per week participating and completing assignments.

Course Requirements and Course Policies:

  • Students are expected to log in to Canvas and participate in class activities weekly, discussion, and dialogue with the course’s instructor throughout the semester

  • Complete a minimum of 120 hours at your internship site (or more, depending on any additional V380 enrollment credit requirements).
  • Hours are verified by your supervisor in the Internship Supervisor Evaluation.
    • We recommend you track your hours and dates worked using an Excel spreadsheet.
  • Ensure your supervisor completes and submits the Internship Supervisor Evaluation
  • Submit Student Self-Evaluation

  • All assignments are due on Sunday, except for the supervisor and self-evaluations, which are due Friday, December 11th.

Unlike in previous semesters, all course assignments must be completed within the semester. An incomplete will be granted only if a student requires additional time to complete the required 120+ field hours; Incompletes will not be approved for missing or late assignments. Students who do not meet these requirements will receive a failing grade for the course.
