Course Title:  The Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector.  

Course Number: PHST 521-21304. 

Course Description:  The theory, size, scope and functions of the nonprofit and voluntary sector are covered from multiple disciplinary perspectives including historical, political, economic and social.

Course Meeting:  Tuesdays 6:00p.m.-8:40p.m. University Hall.  Room 2048

Course Delivery: In person

Course Learning Objectives:

1. Understand and describe the purpose and composition of the nonprofit and voluntary sector,
2. Demonstrate familiarity with resources useful for research on the sector,
3. Understand and explain the historical origins and evolution of philanthropy and the nonprofit sector,
4. Understand and explain the diverse ways in which Americans use voluntary action, 
5. Understand and explain the limitations of philanthropy and nonprofit organizations,
6. Define, analyze, and critique key terminologies, theories, concepts, and issues in the scholarly literature and public discourse on the nonprofit and voluntary sector, and
7. Articulate their own personal definitions of and perspectives on the roles, meaning, and capacity of philanthropy and the nonprofit sector.
