Here is a brief bio of our first Guest ORPHE Professional, Elizabeth Tompkins.
Elizabeth Tompkins is the Natural Resources Coordinator for the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department. She began her current position in June 2009, but has worked for the department since 2005. Elizabeth holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Outdoor Recreation and Resource Management from Indiana University.
As Natural Resources Coordinator, Elizabeth organizes environmental education programs and manages the 109-acre Griffy Lake and its seasonal boathouse operations. She coordinates programming for school groups, the general public, and private groups such as scouts. Environmental education programming through the department employs three seasonal staff and sees over 9,000 participants each year. At the Griffy Lake boathouse, Elizabeth manages six seasonal staff for the seven month boat rental season and nearly 5,000 boats were rented last season, with numbers increasing each year. She continues the department’s history of participation in the Clean Lakes Program each summer by gathering data at Griffy Lake and works with IU-SPEA and DNR to monitor invasive plant growth. She is passionate about maintaining the lake as a thriving recreational and natural resource and providing high quality outdoor education opportunities to the community.
