Which experiences qualify as internships?
The title of your position (volunteer, field experience student, research assistant, employee, intern) is less important than what you accomplish in that position. The term internship is not always applied but really, any experience where you would learn practical knowledge and work with a supervisor potentially provides the opportunity to gain helpful experience. The first step when looking for an “internship” is to ask yourself questions about what you hope to achieve.
So, what should you be looking for in an experience?
- Ways to enhance your transferable skills (professional communication, teamwork, project management for example) or develop specialized knowledge while developing your interests.
- Learn about a career by networking with professionals.
- Observe professionals in action. Ask questions and learn about the job.
- Work with and learn from professionals about tasks that are part of the career. That person serves as your supervisor and may be able to provide valuable feedback. Or even a reference or networking opportunity.
- Seek training to independently perform tasks that are part of the career. You might even be able to independently complete a significant task or project on behalf of the organization.
