2.1 Introduction

Introduction

THE FIRST FOUR WEEKS of class are linked to student success, not only in your course, but also in many cases, to student retention and graduation. In those first weeks, it is important to provide students with information via low-stakes assessments to help them recognize:

  • their own preparedness and gaps in their own prior knowledge,
  • if they are studying correctly, and
  • if they are learning the material.

Low-stakes assessment gives the instructor important insights into students’ preparedness and an opportunity to provide support that they might need.

It is well documented that the first four weeks are directly linked to student success in the course, and in many cases, to retention and graduation. In those first weeks, it is important to provide students with information via low-stakes assessments that let them know if they are studying correctly and if they are learning the material expected. A variety of supports promote student success, particularly important in these early weeks.
