Course Syllabus

Welcome to the Course Design Institute (CDI)!

The goal of this institute is to support you in designing a new course, whether it is new-from-scratch or an existing course you're translating to a new modality. By the end of the institute, you'll have a plan for your course, as well as two completed modules. You will be able to...

  • Design a course that incorporates best teaching practices
  • Plan a course that is student centered and engaging
  • Write learning objectives that align with assessments and instructional materials
  • Create documents and assessments that meet accessibility needs of diverse learners
  • Incorporate subject matter appropriate technology into the course
  • Construct the course using Canvas LMS
  • Apply IU policies and standards to the course

Dates and Times of Institute Meetings

We will meet in the UCET classroom, Northside 245, from 1:00-3:00pm on the following Fridays:

  • January 27: What are the goals of your course?
  • February 10: How will you know students have met the course goals?
  • March 10: How will you support students in meeting the course goals?
  • April 7: How will you engage students with the course materials?
  • April 28: Showcase!

Asynchronous Components

In between meetings, we'll work independently on our courses and keep the discussion going using Canvas discussion boards. We have brought in some content from IU's Teaching Online Series, a self-paced course is for anyone at Indiana University developing and/or teaching an online course. It explores the concept of backwards design as a model for planning and developing your course by beginning with learning outcomes, followed by assessments, activities, and content. It also includes topics such as online presence, course structure, usability, visual design, accessibility, multimedia, syllabi, and course management.

While the content focuses on supporting online instructors, the strategies we've chosen to highlight work no matter the modality. For all the content, you can enroll in the course in IU Expand to work through the modules at your own pace.
